My 21st Century Classroom

Welcome to my Classroom! My name is Brianna Merritt and I am almost 20 years old. My passing has always been teaching and I love being with children. I am currently in my sophomore year at Edinboro University. I am planning to get my Bachelors degree in Early Childhood and Special Education. My future plans for teaching include possibly getting my Master's Degree in teaching. Either way, I will be teaching at an elementary school. In order to be an effective teacher, I will have to continue my education and plan to do so whenever possible. This may include workshops that the school offers the staff or even classes that should be taken to further my understanding of children and how to teach them. As you listen and watch my "This I believe" video, will come to see just why I chose to go into education.

For this assignment, I have chosen Mill Village Elementary school to teach at. Here at this school, they offer grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. The Teacher to student Ratio is 14:1. Out of the 136 students enrolled, 49% are male and 51% Are female. The school has very little ethnic diversity as it is 99% caucasian. I will be teaching Kindergarten. In my classroom, most of the children are on the level they are supposed to be. However, there are a few special needs children in my classroom. There is one in particular with Autism. She can speak, but not well. For most things, she is able to indicate what she wants through an electronic board that speaks. There are many pictures on the board. When she presses the image, the voice will respond. I have taught the children that even though we're all different, we all still feel the same. They all treat each other with kindness and equality. Below is my representation of the child with disabilities.
This is my ideal classroom.
It may look like a typical classroom, but it's my idea of a great one. Here there is plenty of space for the children to move freely. Each part of the room is a different space. There is a place for group time, for art, and even for computers (which are placed on the tables).

My Personal Reflection on the Project: My first thoughts of this project were anything but positive. I didn't quite understand the point of all this. What could I possibly gain from it? Was it even worth it? Well, Over the course this project, I've learned many things. A lot of the things I have learned, I've learned about myself. I know now what I am capable of. As a teacher and a learner, I can now put technology into practice. Through taking risks such as creating a video, doing voice recordings and much more, I've learned just how beneficial using technology can be.
